The “Uganda” team

Liane Merbeck: Managing Director

Liane Merbeck - Abendsonne AfrikaThis is Liane Merbeck. Always on the go, frequently traveling, and sometimes with nothing but nonsense on her mind…..!

Her passion for Africa, its wild animals, and its people and cultures was sparked in childhood through countless animal documentaries, accounts of Dian Fossey, and classic films and series such as Hatari or Daktari. Growing up in a forest near Ulm, she often dreamed of vast steppes and savannas, dense rainforests, and encounters with both humans and wildlife. It wasn’t until years later that her dream became reality—she and her husband Michael embarked on many incredible adventures in a specially modified jeep during a unique journey that took them across national parks and countries in southern and eastern Africa for nearly a whole year.

Many more trips followed, during which the two explored new routes and paths, engaged with the local people and culture, familiarized themselves with the infrastructure, and inspected accommodations and aid projects—all to share their knowledge with other Africa enthusiasts.

Michael Merbeck

Michael Merbeck - African SunsetThis is Michael Merbeck. He always thinks carefully about what to do next, yet his sense of adventure never fades. His love for Africa began through his love for his wife. Today, nothing brings him greater joy than being deep in the African wilderness, surrounded by the sounds of nature—the cry of eagles, the roars of lions, and the howls of jackals. Adding a sundowner under the stunning sunset only makes those hours spent in front of the computer or on the phone seem even shorter! Unfortunately, such moments are always far too brief!

With over 150,000 kilometers of self-driven travel across southern and eastern Africa, Michael Merbeck is a true expert when it comes to self-guided safaris.

As a passionate amateur filmmaker, he has also brought back many beautiful and interesting videos from Africa. During his numerous live presentations and multimedia shows that take you into the fascinating world of Africa, you’ll also have the chance to see Michael Merbeck’s breathtaking videos.

Katrin Brück

Katrin Brück - African sunsetRight after finishing school, Katrin felt drawn to go abroad—so she packed her bags to explore foreign countries and cultures.

Even during her studies in tourism at Kempten University, which she successfully completed in January 2011, Katrin gained valuable experience abroad.

Her passion for breathtaking landscapes, wild animals, and curiosity about foreign cultures eventually led Katrin to Abendsonne. Since July 2011, the advisory team has been supporting her here.

Katrin is very excited to share her passion for Africa with you and will gladly assist you in planning your trip to Uganda/Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Africa – a childhood dream

Back when Dian Fossey was still alive and her documentaries, along with those of her colleague and friend Jane Goodall, were shown on TV, I dreamed of experiencing these amazing creatures up close myself. I made it there. And reality was even more beautiful and intense than the dream.

The last of their kind—estimates suggest there are only about 700 mountain gorillas left—can be found in the foothills of the ancient rainforests of the Virunga Mountains, the mountain range that stretches between Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo. Join us for unforgettable encounters with mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and other primates.

Itinerary for Uganda/Rwanda:

Day 1: Entebbe

Upon arrival in Entebbe, you’ll be taken to your cozy accommodation. Depending on timing, a visit to the Botanical Gardens is possible (optional).

Days 2–3: Murchison Falls National Park

A full-day excursion (approximately 5–6 hours) through rural villages and fields leads to Murchison Falls National Park, home to over 450 bird species and 70 mammal species, including brightly colored Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, various antelopes, Nile crocodiles, Uganda kob frogs, waterbucks, oribis, lions, hyenas, and the rare shoebill stork. Wildlife viewing is available by vehicle and boat. A highlight of the trip is visiting the stunning Murchison Falls. Here, the Nile rushes through a 7-meter-wide gorge with a loud roar before plunging about 43 meters downward. Full board included.

Optionally, you can visit the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a project dedicated to protecting these rare rhinos (an extended stay is recommended).

Days 4–5: Kibale Forest National Park, Chimpanzee Tracking

A long leg of the journey (about 8–9 hours) takes you through vast tea and coffee plantations to Fort Portal. Around 25 volcanic crater lakes create a diverse natural landscape. Kibale Forest National Park boasts one of the highest primate densities in the world. In the rainforests, you’ll go on guided walking safaris in groups of four, accompanied by a local ranger, to spot chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, bushbabies, and other monkey species. Here, you have an excellent chance of observing habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Additionally, over 300 bird species and 140 butterfly species inhabit this area. However, the forest elephants and buffaloes that are native to the region are rarely seen. You’ll also visit the expansive Bigodi Wetland, where locally built wooden walkways and trails lead you to more primates, colorful butterflies, and tropical birds.lead. VP

An optional extra day can be spent in this picturesque area to hike to the numerous crater lakes and a small waterfall, while also visiting traditional villages along the way.

Days 6–7: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Cross the equator to reach Queen Elizabeth National Park. Within its diverse landscape featuring open savannas, wetlands, tropical rainforests, rivers, and lakes, you’ll embark on game drives to spot elephants, Cape buffalo, topi antelopes, giant forest pigs, and brush-tailed porcupines, as well as Nile crocodiles. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter leopards and hyenas (an optional extension day is available here). Birdwatchers will be delighted by the park’s over 600 species of birds. You’ll also take a boat ride on the Kazinga Channel to observe numerous waterbirds, river hippos, and various wildlife along the shores. VP

An optional hike through the dense rainforest in the stunning Kyamburu Gorge, followed by more chimpanzee tracking.

Combination Options

Below are two versions of this tour. We’ll design the perfect itinerary based on the time you have available.

Option A: With Gorilla Tracking in Uganda

Mountain gorillas in UgandaDays 1–7 follow the itinerary described for Uganda/Rwanda.

Days 8–9: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, gorilla tracking

Early in the morning, you’ll drive through the forests to the Ishasha region to search for the “tree-climbing lions.” After that, you’ll continue to Buhoma. The next morning, you’ll go on gorilla tracking in Uganda (as described in Option A). VP

On an optional extra day, you’ll have the chance to go on a guided hike through the dense and fascinating rainforest.

Day 10: Lake Mburo National Park

Photos of mountain gorillas in UgandaToday, you’ll travel via Kabale to Lake Mburo National Park. Open grasslands with scattered acacia trees alternate with wetlands, forests, and lush vegetation. Take a boat ride on the lake, go on a wildlife safari, or opt for a bush walk in this beautiful park, which is home to zebras, oribi and black-fronted duikers, as well as numerous bird species. The park also hosts elusive leopards. VP

Day 11: Kampala

Early in the morning, a wildlife viewing tour in Lake Mburo National Park. Return to Entebbe for an overnight stay at a cozy guesthouse. Depending on schedule, a visit to a market in Kampala along the way. F

Day 12: Departure or extension

Transfer to the airport for flight back to Germany or option to extend the trip. F

Option B: With gorilla tracking in Rwanda

Days 1–7 follow the itinerary described for Uganda/Rwanda

Day 8: Tree-climbing lions and Lake Bunyonyi

Early in the morning, the journey takes you through forests to the Ishasha region to search for the “tree-climbing lions.” After that, head to the picturesque Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda’s deepest lake. You can take a boat ride or hike along the lake shore. VP

Days 9–10: Parc National des Volcanoes, gorilla tracking

The journey crosses the border into Rwanda, passing through gentle hills and small villages until you reach Kinigi on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park. It was here that Dian Fossey conducted her research on mountain gorillas.

An optional pre-day is recommended for acclimatization, as the altitude of the Virunga Mountains (up to 4,000 meters during gorilla tracking) can cause circulatory issues in some guests. On this day, you can relax at the lodge or choose from the following optional activities: tracking the extremely rare “Golden Monkeys” (currently around 120 EUR) in the lower rainforest, or visiting the former Karisoke research station and Dian Fossey’s grave (currently around 100 EUR).

The mountain rainforests are home to these gentle giants. Guided by local trackers, you set out in search of one of the gorilla groups. The number of visitors is strictly limited to 8 per group, with visit times capped at 1 hour. This measure is essential to prevent the animals from being subjected to excessive stress or diseases that can easily spread from humans to these sensitive creatures. Good health is required for all participants. Gorillas never stray too far from their last known location, and thanks to the experienced trackers, they are almost always found in the dense rainforest (though no guarantee can be given—so far, every group has succeeded in locating them).

The trekking time varies depending on the gorilla group visited, taking approximately 2–6 hours. Once you see the gorillas up close, the hardships quickly fade away. You get so close that you can almost touch them. They chew on their favorite plants, and it seems they aren’t bothered by the presence of humans at all. Whether it’s a mighty silverback, females, or youngsters, all of them have a gaze that penetrates deep into the heart.

The maintenance of the park, and thus the protection of mountain gorillas, is funded through entrance fees. In this way, we contribute to the preservation of these unique creatures. The first gorilla permit is included in the tour price. VP

Day 11: Kigali

Traveling through the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” past villages and fields, you’ll continue on to Rwanda’s capital: Kigali. This vibrant and modern city has retained its small-town charm. You’ll have the opportunity to take a city tour visiting the main attractions or to stroll around the markets.

Depending on the schedule, you can also go on a city tour that includes visits to the Nyabugogo Market, the Muslim quarter in Nyamirambo, and the Franco-Rwandan Cultural Center. Overnight stay in Kigali. F

Day 12: Return journey or extension

Transfer to the airport. An unforgettable journey comes to an end—one you’ll dream about and talk about for a long time to come.

Optional extensions in Uganda

Option 1: Ngamba Island

Ngamba Island – a chimpanzee project founded by Jane Goodall.

Choose between a half-day or full-day excursion to Ngamba Island. You’ll take a boat ride across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island.

There, chimpanzees that were previously held in captivity are reintroduced into the wild. Through this project led by Jane Goodall, you’ll hear the stories of their liberation and learn many interesting facts about chimpanzee behavior; you can also observe them up close during feeding time. Overnight stays are available in Entebbe or optionally on Ngamba Island.

Option 2: Lake Victoria and the source of the Nile

2 days / 1 night: Jinja

Visit the source of the Nile and Ssezibwa Falls in the Mukono District. In Mabira Forest, you can observe the colorful birdlife. You’ll drive to Jinja via the Owen Falls Dam, Uganda’s largest dam. There will be time to explore local markets and villages. Experience the fascinating fruit bats, which become active over the Nile especially during the picturesque sunset. Optional activities include white-water rafting, bungee jumping, boat trips on Lake Victoria, and more.

Option 3: Lake Albert and Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

2 days / 1 night: Lake Albert and Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

Over two days, you’ll explore Lake Albert and the reserve, enjoying breathtaking views of the “Blue Mountains” in Congo. The reserve is considered a hidden gem among Uganda experts who want to experience nature and wildlife away from the main tourist routes.

Optional extensions to Rwanda

Option 1: Nyungwe National Park

4 days / 3 nights: Nyungwe Forest Lodge (highly recommended!)

The Nyungwe National Park covers approximately 970 km² and boasts one of East Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse evergreen montane forest regions. It features one of the highest primate densities in the world.

In this still-pristine park, 13 different primate species call home. Alongside chimpanzees, you’ll find rare East African species such as colobus monkeys, gray-cheeked mangabeys, and bearded mangabeys. Here, troops of colobus monkeys can number up to 400 individuals — whereas in other parts of Africa, groups of around 40 are more typical. The park also hosts a variety of other animals (a total of 75 mammal species), including servals, civets, genets, mongoose, otters, small antelopes, giant forest pigs, and even the reclusive leopards.

An unimaginable variety of green and flowering plant species—140 orchid species alone, many of which remain unnamed—give a vivid glimpse into what a mountain rainforest is like. There are also around 120 species of butterflies. Birdwatchers will find this area particularly rewarding, with 275 different bird species identified here, 24 of which are endemic to this region.

The 5-star lodge built in 2010 within Nyungwe National Park is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape and is the only lodge in the area. It features 24 luxuriously equipped rooms and suites, each complete with a private terrace, air conditioning, bathroom, safe, minibar, satellite TV, wireless LAN, and coffee/tea makers. An open fireplace in every room provides cozy warmth on cool evenings. This small, intimate establishment is surrounded by tea plantations and is located at the edge of the Nyungwe forest.

An oversized, heated infinity pool with views of the rainforest, a fitness center, and a spa area offering various treatments and massages (at an extra charge), along with a whirlpool, ensure a relaxing experience. The lodge also features a tea lounge where tea ceremonies are held, a bar, and a modern restaurant with a terrace.

Activities available at an extra charge include chimpanzee tracking, tracking other primates, canopy walking (where a fixed suspension bridge spans the treetops of the rainforest, providing excellent views from above), various guided walks (1–7 hours) such as those to waterfalls and for birdwatching, as well as cultural excursions. VP

Our personal opinion: This lodge is particularly suitable for the end of a trip, as it offers an ideal place to relax and reflect on the journey!

With a bit of luck, you can spot various primate species right from your own balcony/terrace, and many colorful birds can be observed in the tea plantation. The short hiking trail, which can be explored independently, leads from the lodge into the rainforest.

The beautiful, large swimming pool and wellness treatments ensure the perfect relaxation!

The chef prepares fantastic dishes that you can enjoy alongside fine wine while taking in the stunning views.

For us, this is currently the best lodge in all of Uganda/Rwanda and definitely worth staying at (for at least 3 nights; ideally 6 nights)!

Option 2: Relaxation on Lake Kivu

6 days / 5 nights: Lake Kivu

The journey through beautiful scenery takes you to the Ndaba Falls. Enjoy the breathtaking mountain panorama. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive at a popular resort on Lake Kivu.

Lake Kivu is one of the deepest lakes in Africa, nestled among gentle hills. You can witness breathtaking African sunsets against a picturesque backdrop. Take some time here to reflect on your journey and all the experiences you’ve had before returning to the stresses of everyday life. Swim in the clear, bilharzia-free waters of the lake.

Optional excursions include visits to hot springs, boat trips to the many islands on the lake, cultural tours, walks, and hikes.

Included in the price

Important note: Any changes to the itinerary or accommodations, as well as alterations to the start and end dates of the trip, remain expressly reserved. However, there are other reasons beyond the amiability of its people as well.

Spanning both sides of the equator, a network of 10 national parks and various other protected areas offers nature lovers the fantastic opportunity to experience Uganda’s diverse flora and fauna.
