Katonga National Park

Start › Mountain Gorillas & More › National Parks: Unspoilt Nature in Uganda › Katonga National Park

The Katonga National Park lies in central Uganda in the Kyenjojo and Kamwenge districts, along the Katonga River. Since September 2025 it has been a national park; previously the area had been designated as Katonga Wildlife Reserve.

Across around 207 km², wetlands, papyrus stands and open savannahs shape the park. It is home to over 40 mammal species – among them the water-loving sitatungas – and more than 150 bird species.

A special experience is canoe trips on the Katonga River; game drives and birdwatching are also possible. From Kampala it is around 280 kilometres – the park is well suited as a stopover on the way to Fort Portal or to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
