Bukaleba National Park

Start › Mountain Gorillas & More › National Parks: Unspoilt Nature in Uganda › Bukaleba National Park

The Bukaleba National Park lies in the east of Uganda in the Mayuge District on the northern shore of Lake Victoria – around 120 kilometres (driving distance) from Kampala. In September 2025 it was declared a national park as one of six protected areas; previously the area had been designated as Bukaleba Central Forest Reserve since 1932.

Across around 97 km² the park combines forest and lakeshore ecosystems. Originally laid out as a reforestation area, a remarkable diversity of species has developed here: the park is home for instance to green monkeys and over 47 bird species – among them the black-and-white hornbill and the African pygmy kingfisher.

Possible activities are forest walks, birdwatching, boat trips on Lake Victoria and sport fishing. The tourist infrastructure is still being developed.

Good to know: The park lies only around one hour from Jinja and the source of the Nile and combines well with a trip to the east of Uganda.
