Distribution of languages in Uganda In total, more than 40 indigenous languages are counted in Uganda (Ethnologue 2025: 41), divided into two major groups:

  • Bantu languages
  • Nilo-Saharan languages

The most widespread Bantu language is Luganda, which is spoken and understood by almost everyone, particularly in the southern and central parts of the country. The official languages today are English and – since 2005 – Swahili (Kiswahili). Since 2022 Swahili has been intended as a compulsory subject in schools; the introduction starts in phases from 2026. No other language has official status beyond English and Swahili – not even Luo, which is widespread in the north.

(The map giving an overview of the languages was produced by Mark Dingemanse of the Vormdicht agency ).
