Hoima in western UgandaHoima lies in western Uganda in the immediate vicinity of Lake Albert, right on the edge of the Central African Rift. Hoima has around 141,000 inhabitants (2024 census) and there are not many tourist attractions in the surrounding area. For tourism, the town continues to serve rather as a transit stop on the way to Masindi or Fort Portal – economically, the region has been changing considerably since the oil discoveries in the Albertine Graben (airport and refinery projects).

In the days of the Kingdom of Bunyoro, Hoima with its royal residence was still an important place. Today you can still visit some royal tombs in the surrounding area (on the road to Masindi). A trip to Lake Albert is also worthwhile. On the way there you also pass some hot springs.

Although Hoima is not exactly the tourist centre of Uganda, there is a whole series of pleasant hotels. Particularly worth mentioning is the Hoima Kontiki Hotel with pool and fitness area; for little money you can stay here in princely style.
