You need not worry about your food in Uganda. You will always be deliciously full – either in international or in local restaurants. In Kampala you will certainly find upmarket restaurants attached to the first-class hotels (e.g. Sheraton or Grand Imperial Hotel).
Other restaurants serving international cuisine are plentiful (Chinese, Italian, French, Indian and much more). In addition, in many small African restaurants you can (must!) get to know the regional cuisine. At lunchtime many restaurants offer an “All you can eat” buffet. There you get traditional dishes at a very low price, usually less than 5 euros. Ask your driver or guide for insider tips.
Prices
In first-class restaurants you pay corresponding prices. They are not quite as high as in Europe, but still quite expensive. At a normal restaurant you can reckon on 10 to 15 euros per person. In the smaller (African) restaurants, by contrast, a few euros are enough.
Ugandan Cuisine – Delicious and Affordable
The absolute basis for almost every Ugandan dish is cooking bananas (matoke), which are traditionally steamed wrapped in banana leaves. These are served with various vegetables, meat, fish and/or peanut sauce. All very, very tasty! You must try the many snacks offered at almost every corner. Particularly recommended are chapati (thin flatbreads made from water and flour) and samosas – deep-fried pastry parcels filled with meat or vegetables.
Drinks are not lacking: water, tea, coffee, beer, wine and spirits are on every menu and every shop shelf.
