DJ MOUNTAIN CLIMBING – 10 days / 9 nights – Tour Code DJU30
Trekking & mountain climbing in the Rwenzori Mountains
Introduction
The Rwenzori Mountains are the largest mountain range in Africa, featuring six peaks over 4,500 meters. These include Mt. Stanley, Mt. Speke, Mt. Baker, Mt. Gessi (on the Congolese side), Mt. Emin Pascha, and Mt. Luigi di Savoia. They stretch 120 km along the border between Uganda and Congo. The highest peak is Margherita Peak on Mt. Stanley at 5,109 meters, named after Queen Margherita of Italy, who funded the first climbing expedition there in June 1906. The name “Rwenzori” means “mountains of rain” in the local language, aptly describing the region’s climate with relatively high rainfall.
The central trekking route
The best way to explore the Rwenzori Mountains is via the so-called “central circuit.” This route starts at the village of Nyakalengija, follows the Mobuku River valley, and then heads toward Mount Baker. From there, it’s a direct ascent to Mount Stanley and Margherita Peak. This trek passes through five distinct vegetation zones, starting from montane forest, through bamboo zones, all the way to the alpine zone, covering an elevation difference of 2,800 m to 3,500 m. The trek typically takes 6 days. It’s important to acclimatize gradually to avoid altitude sickness.
Along the route, there are several huts offering standard comfort with simple mattresses. Drinking water comes directly from mountain springs.
Destination Jungle ensures your safety and well-being with experienced guides and cooks. Porters are available to carry up to 25 kg per person, including provisions.
The best time to visit the Rwenzoris
Although global climate change affects the Rwenzoris as well, the best time to visit is during the dry seasons—between December and March, June and July, or September and October.
Are you ready for the climb?
While trekking and climbing in the Rwenzoris isn’t technically difficult, it does present its challenges. The journey is long and arduous, taking up to 7 days. Therefore, endurance and physical fitness are essential, and prior training never hurts. High-tech equipment isn’t required, but good trekking shoes and especially rubber boots are necessary, as large parts of the trail are very swampy. The final sections to Margherita Peak lie within a glacial area and require the use of ropes and crampons.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours – Habitat: Alpine zone
Day 6 – Stage 4: From Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut, 4,430 m.
