Mihingo Lodge

Mihingo Lodge – a peaceful and exclusive place to relax directly at Lake Mburo National Park.

The Rooms at Mihingo Lodge

Zelt der Mhingo-LodgeWe have ten rooms at this lodge. What makes it special: these are wooden platforms built on stilts and covered with a thatched roof.

At Mihingo Lodge you stay in a spacious and comfortable tent – including a bathroom with hot water, shower and breathtaking views!

Each of these luxury tents is located on a small private plot within the Mihingo Lodge, so you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings in complete seclusion. You can choose between different settings: some tents are located in a wooded area, some with views of the lake, and some tents are situated on rocky outcrops with magnificent views of the national park.

Dining and Pool Area at Mihingo Lodge

You can enjoy hearty meals at Mihingo Lodge in our large thatched dining area. Located on a rocky outcrop, the building materials come exclusively from the surrounding area: weathered wood from dead olive trees and local grasses.

Below the dining area is our swimming pool with magnificent views over the nature reserve. Mihingo Lodge is known not least for the breathtaking sunsets that can be enjoyed from the dining and pool areas.

Lake Mburo National Park

Mihingo Lodge offers its guests the fantastic opportunity to observe wildlife at the watering hole below the swimming pool.

Lake Mburo National Park is home to many animal species, including zebras and impalas, which you will not find in most other national parks in Uganda. In addition, many waterbucks, buffalo, hippopotamuses as well as leopards, crocodiles and many other species are native to the national park.

Leisure Activities at Mihingo Lodge

In addition to relaxing by the pool and listening to the sounds of nature, Mihingo Lodge offers numerous other activities to explore Lake Mburo National Park. These include boat trips on Lake Mburo, walks through the savanna, game drives and – almost unique in Uganda – horseback safaris.

Mihingo Lodge: Nature Conservation Always First

As operators of Mihingo Lodge, we pay great attention to the fragile environment, and environmental protection is very important to us. The buildings are designed to blend unobtrusively with the rocky and savanna landscape. Electricity, hot water and water pumps are of course powered by solar energy. We have also installed a system to use natural rainwater for our purposes.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake-Mburo-Nationalpark

Lake Mburo National Park is a very special place that particularly thrives on its diversity. It is known for its numerous wetlands and for being home to several species of mammals and birds that you will not find anywhere else in Uganda.

Its extraordinary landscape with gentle hills and idyllic lakeshores offers a diverse mosaic of habitats for the rich wildlife: seasonal and permanent swamps, extensive acacia forests and green valleys.

You can begin exploring the park at the “Rwonyo” headquarters, which is only 30 minutes away (15 km drive from Mihingo Lodge). From here you can start your nature walks or take a boat trip on Lake Mburo.

Zebra in Lake Mburo National ParkWith a total area of 260 square kilometers, Lake Mburo National Park is relatively small compared to many other East African parks. However, because of its variety of habitats – dry slopes, rocks, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannas, forests, lakes and swamps – it is home to a surprising diversity of plants and animals.

In the center of the park is Lake Mburo, which together with 14 other lakes in the surrounding area is part of a large wetland. The swamp area is connected by the Ruizi River on the west side of the park. Thus, almost one-fifth of the park consists of wetlands – either seasonally or permanently flooded. The swamps are home to many water birds, which you can observe wonderfully on a boat tour.

Activities

Hardly any other lodge in Uganda offers you so many options for spending your leisure time. From wildlife viewing to sports and wellness offerings, there is something for everyone.

Horseback Safaris at Mihingo Lodge

Mihingo Lodge is known for its horseback safaris in and around Lake Mburo National Park. Horseback safaris are an exciting way to observe wildlife around the Mihingo Lodge. Without engine noise and exhaust fumes, you feel part of nature and have the chance to see even very shy animals. It is an exhilarating experience that you should not miss.

We always adapt the ride to the riding experience of our guests. For advanced riders, there are also beautiful routes for trotting and galloping. We have a total of 7 horses and 4 ponies available for you.

One of the best tours in the park is a 4 to 5 hour ride on the 4 km long Warukiri Range. This trail is in the middle of the park and offers a magnificent 360-degree view of the surrounding hills and valleys. At the end of the trail is a watering hole, which is often a destination for buffalo and other animals.

Our horses are suitable for persons up to a maximum of 80-100 kg. Helmets are available in all sizes. For the ride, we recommend long pants and sturdy shoes. Currently, we conduct our horseback safaris for groups of up to 6 guests. All our rides are accompanied by one or usually two experienced guides.

All guests who have ever done a horseback safari were absolutely thrilled!
