The Kibale National Park has emerged from a former forest reserve and was granted the status of a national park in 1993. It extends over 766 km² and ranges from 1,100 to 1,600 metres.

Although it lies in the immediate vicinity of Queen Elizabeth National Park, it nevertheless displays some peculiarities. Thus almost 80 % of its area is covered with indigenous evergreen moist forests and deciduous forests. Swamps and grassland dominate the rest of the area. Owing to the high proportion of forest, chimpanzee trekking in particular has a high success rate here.

Accessibility by car from Kampala is good. From the nearby Fort Portal a track leads into the interior of the park. A visit is possible all year round, although during the rainy seasons of April – May and October/November you should also expect cool nights.

At the Kanyanchu visitor centre some wooden huts and campsites are available. In the nearby towns of Nkingo and Bigodi there are also some hotels, but not all of them are yet registered in our database.
