Uganda’s original nature religions have largely been displaced by intense missionary activity and are now to be found almost only in rural areas. Today almost 80 % of Ugandans are Christians, half of them Catholics and half Protestants. In 1879 the first French Catholic missionaries reached Uganda, and British Protestants shortly afterwards.
Islam is also significant, having found its way to Uganda through trade relations with the Arab world even before the missionaries. Today around 5 to 10 % of Ugandans are Muslims.
