The climate in Uganda: moderately tropical

Start › Land & People: Uganda Country Information › The climate in Uganda: moderately tropical

Sunset in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda Because of its average altitude of around 1,000 metres, the climate is moderately tropical and more bearable than in many other states on the continent.

Over the course of the year the weather divides into dry and rainy seasons. The best travel times remain the dry months from June to September and from December to February. During the rainy season (mid-March to June, October to December) most areas of Uganda receive 1,000 to 2,000 mm of rainfall, the basis for the widely lush vegetation. In the Rwenzori Mountains as much as 3,000 mm falls per year.

Only in the north of the country, in the Karamoja region and north of Lake Albert close to South Sudan, can one enjoy a semi-desert climate in some years, as sometimes only 100 mm of rain falls here.

This driest landscape is at the same time the hottest area, where temperatures can far exceed the 30° Celsius mark. In the remaining parts of the country it is more bearable, with maximum temperatures between 20 and 27° Celsius. The thermometer only drops below 12 to 18° Celsius in the higher altitudes of the mountains.

Humidity is also less oppressive because of the altitude and the landlocked position of the country. Only near the great lakes can well-being on a safari through Uganda be somewhat strained.
