This national park differs scenically from the others in that it is located at an altitude of on average only 700 metres and has a humid, warm climate with daytime temperatures around 30° Celsius. Particularly worthy of protection in the 220 km² park are the lowland rainforests, which are ecologically counted as part of the Ituri Forest of the Congo. 336 tree species, around a third of which can be seen in Uganda only here, 53 mammal species and around 400 bird species are well worth a trip to the far west of Uganda. As the park is located in the middle of the rift valley, the hot springs and geysers at Sempaya can be visited. Also of particular appeal are the longer hikes, bookable on site, into the remote lower sections of the park with overnight stays in tents.
Its proximity to the Congo also had a negative side for a long time, namely the activities of rebels from across the border. Until 2001 the park therefore had to be closed several times for security reasons. Since then, however, things have been calm.
The road conditions as far as the immediate vicinity of the park are adequate. However, the last stretch from the main road to Ntandi, the seat of the park management, can only be driven slowly.
Although rain must be expected all year round, the best travel times are in June/July and from December to February. You can stay – if you place greater value on comfort – in Fort Portal or at the Semliki Safari Lodge.
