Birdwatching, 23 days

Overview

For bird lovers, Uganda is a true highlight. There are more bird species per square kilometer here than in any other country in Africa – over 1,000 bird species have been officially recorded in Uganda.

This makes Uganda the country with the highest bird population in Africa. Nearly half of all bird species on the African continent can be found here, including the legendary shoebill.

Globally, over 10% of all bird species inhabit Uganda, as species from neighboring countries to the north and south also gather here. This is because Uganda’s landscapes and habitats are incredibly diverse: lush savannas, arid deserts, snow-capped mountains, volcanoes, and an Afro-alpine zone.

A notable area is the Albertine Rift Endemic Zone (ARE), where 38 species of endemic birds are found in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo. Of these, 25 species inhabit Uganda, primarily in the forests of the Mgahinga region and at Bwindi National Park in the southwest.

This safari focuses on Uganda’s most attractive destinations for bird and primate watching. The following areas will be visited:

Mabamba Swamp, Mabira Forest, Budongo Forest, Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale Forest, Bwindi National Park, Echuya Bamboo Forest, Mgahinga National Park, and Lake Mburo National Park.

Notable bird species include the shoebill, Nahan francolin, giant pied hornbill, green-breasted pitta, eagle-eyed thrush, black-crowned broadbill, papyrus warbler, reed hornbill, and numerous other Albertine Rift endemics.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities on this safari to observe wild animals, mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys in their natural habitats.
