Tip: Make mobile calls. Works perfectly! However, check with your mobile operator whether your phone is suitable for use outside Europe. Uganda has a good landline network. You can conveniently make calls from your hotel, which is the most expensive option. Public phone boxes and landlines have practically disappeared; today calls are almost exclusively made by mobile phone.
Very good mobile network
Uganda has a well-developed mobile network; the main providers are MTN and Airtel (together over 90% market share), as well as Lycamobile, among others. It is quite strange when you are in the most remote nature observing rare animals and suddenly your phone rings. Because you have reception almost everywhere in the country.
Therefore our tip: Simply bring your mobile phone and buy a Ugandan SIM card in Uganda for a few euros. You can buy call credit (“air time”) at countless kiosks or top it up via mobile money.
SIM cards from MTN and Airtel are available at the airport and everywhere in the country for just a few euros (registration with ID required); domestic calls are very cheap, and for international calls we recommend a data option with messenger apps.
