Echuya National Park

Start › Mountain Gorillas & More › National Parks: Unspoilt Nature in Uganda › Echuya National Park

The Echuya National Park lies in the south-west of Uganda on the border of the Kisoro and Rubanda districts, on the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift. Since September 2025 the area has been a national park; previously it had been protected as Echuya Central Forest Reserve since 1939.

Across around 34 km², montane and bamboo forests alternate with the Muchuya Swamp. This mixture makes the park a hotspot for birdwatchers: rare species such as the Grauer’s swamp warbler, the dwarf honeyguide and the red-throated alethe live here. Among the primates are L’Hoest’s monkeys, colobus monkeys and blue monkeys.

Visitors undertake forest walks and birdwatching and can visit the Batwa community at the edge of the park, which presents its traditional culture. From Kampala it is around 470 kilometres – the park lies on the way to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
