Entebbe – The Gateway to Uganda
Entebbe, with around 81,000 inhabitants (2024 census), is a manageable-sized town. In contrast to Kampala, things are far more relaxed here, which is why Entebbe is always worth a day trip. The residents of the capital Kampala know this too, and like to head for Entebbe and its surroundings as a weekend destination.
The name Entebbe is Luganda and means something like “seat ” or “chair”. According to legend, there used to be a place here where legal disputes were settled by the local residents and the person passing judgment took a seat made of stone.
Entebbe lies on a peninsula in Lake Victoria and is consequently surrounded by water on three sides. One reason for the pleasant and very bearable local climate. Until 1962, that is until the year of Uganda’s independence, Entebbe was the capital. And even today some ministries are still to be found here.
The town itself, situated at an altitude of 1,158 m, consists by and large of just one main street. Worth highlighting, however, are a few houses from the colonial era that are still pleasant to look at.
